How to Make Smores Camping Dessert

In case you didn’t grow up making smores over the campfire, here’s how it’s done. Camping smores require a campfire, so make sure to check for any fire restrictions before your trip.

Have fire restrictions? Try this Skillet Smores recipe instead! Same sweet gooey treat, but it’s cooked over your propane camp stove instead of a flame.

The Basics: How to Make S’mores

Start by breaking a graham cracker in half. The honey flavor is the classic, but cinnamon and chocolate are also delicious. Place a few pieces of milk chocolate on top of one half.

Now toast a marshmallow over the campfire.

For toasting, I like to use reusable smores sticks. That way you don’t need to break off a live tree branch. Don’t use a dead, dried stick for roasting because it will catch fire quickly.

Make sure you have enough length on your s’mores sticks so that you can maintain a safe distance from the flame.

Now the big question: do you light your marshmallow on fire, or do you toast it to a golden brown? This part is up for debate.

Some folks like to get the marshmallow in the flame and light it on fire, and then quickly blow it out. This creates a more intense charred flavor, and the marshmallow stays firmer.

I much prefer the low and slow toasted marshmallow. Instead of putting it in the flame, hover your marshmallow above or next to the flame, or over some coals. Keep rotating the marshmallow so you get a nice golden brown on all sides. The marshmallow will puff up and get soft and gooey.

The key is to remove it from the fire and get it on top of your chocolate graham cracker before it falls off into the fire! It’s a delicate balance, and I usually like to push the line and get the most toasted, puffy, warm marshmallow I can!

Once you toast your marshmallow and place it on the chocolate, take the other half of the graham cracker. Use it to slide the marshmallow off the roasting stick. Then, press the graham crackers together. Enjoy right away!
